Evergreen Plant Design for Year-Round Beauty

Our Silverdale customer no longer wanted to worry about maintaining her lawn.  It was a challenge for her grass to thrive, because the area did not receive a lot of sunlight and was prone to moss.

lawn removal kitsap county

We removed her existing lawn and installed rock features such as a dry creek bed to break up the space and add structure.

landscapers silverdale

She requested evergreens in shades of blue and green.  We planted blue star juniper, which likes full sun but is tolerant of shade and has a rich blue foliage year-round, along with hebe ‘karo golden esk, and ‘hetz midget’ arborvitae to name a few.

We selected grasses such as blue fescue and sedge for texture, alongside Japanese anemone for fun and colorful plant pairings.  Liriope was selected because of its attractive violet-blue flowers.

Design Elements for Beautiful Winter Landscapes

One glance outside and it’s obvious that winter is here in full swing.  Its accompanying weather has a way of making most gardens look dreary and spent.   However, with custom hardscaping features from Northwest Construction & Landscape and thoughtful plant choices, you can enjoy a stunning landscape year-round, no matter what Mother Nature brings.

Structure is the key to every great landscape.  Even underneath a layer of snow, a unique combination of varied elevations, interesting shapes and textures can be
appreciated.  The photo below demonstrates this beautifully.

snow landscapes kitsap county

The subtle yet effective concrete steps leading to the front door seem to lift the front entrance.  Mature evergreens  frame the house with impressive proportions, while the evergreens lining the entrance pathway casually contrast in size.  Amidst this rather tranquil scene, the two bare, ornamental trees offer balance, varied
texture, and interestingness.

If your winter landscape isn’t up to snuff, give us a call and we’d be happy to meet with you to offer ideas to match your budget.

Exterior Stamped Vertical Concrete Overlay

We’ve talked a lot about vertical concrete and utilized it for a concrete fire pit earlier this year.  Here are progress shots of a stamped vertical concrete overlay.

Hardscaping Project with Three Rivers flagstone & more…

Here we see the importance of selecting the right hardscaping material.  Landscape block was used for a curving retaining wall along with gravel.  The star of this project, however, is the flagstone pathway.

Landscape & Concrete Project for North Kitsap Baptist Church

The lovely woman who hired us on behalf of her church had this to say about the project once it was complete: “We were gone this week… I went down to look at it and it is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes… The plants are so varied and interesting – we are looking forward to seeing the gardens grow and mature!!!”

Bark Special — 3 yards of bark for $99.00!

Mulch is awesome for a number of reasons.  During the growing season, mulch helps to retain moisture while also suppressing pesky weed growth.  In the winter, mulch protects plants from freezing temperatures by providing insulation.   We suggest a 4″ layer of bark to ensure their survival.  Just in time for winter, we’re offering our Bark Special!

For only $99.00* we’ll pick-up, deliver, and spread up to 3 yards of medium bark. A local supply store charges $35 per yard for the same bark, and that’s if YOU pick it up.  At 3 yards for $99.00, we’re delivering it and spreading it cheaper than you can buy it!

VERTICAL STAMPED CONCRETE

We’ve blogged about the artful touch that decorative concrete stamping and coloring adds to patios, walkways, and stairways.  This same process can also be used for vertical surfaces such as entry way walls or the walls surrounding an exterior or interior fireplace.

Flex-C-Ment is a cementitious wall overlay material that’s lighter than conventional cementitious overlay, though it’s applied thickly allowing for its manipulation into various textures and patterns.

decorative concrete kitsap countyAndy Yoder, inventor of the product, says: “You can do more with Flex-C-Ment than manufactured stone because you can make the stone patterns any size and shape you want.  The material takes the impression of stamps well and is easy to sculpt or carve.”

Not only is Flex-C-Ment versatile, it’s 20% to 40% less expensive to install than manufactured stone products.

We offer discounted rates on concrete patios, driveways, walls, and more during the winter months of December, January, and February.  Call us today for a free consultation and estimate!

Colored Concrete Patio, Stairs & Retaining Wall

This project showcases how color can be used to make a bold design statement.  You’ll pay more for colored concrete, but as with any lasting investment for your home, it makes sense to spend the extra money to get the product that will make you over the moon happy.

An ashlar slate stamped concrete pattern with a roman slate textured concrete border was used for this Poulsbo project.

The Benefits of Water Gardens

Water gardens transform your landscape into your own private retreat where you can relax and enjoy leisure time with family and friends.  They provide a focal point for your outdoor living space; a natural gathering place for entertaining.

We used High Cascade Granite for this water feature, and complemented it with St. Helens Rockery.

A well planned water feature offers a space in your immediate surroundings for you to take refuge from everyday stress and anxiety.  Flowing water coupled with lush foliage creates a visually pleasing environment that soothes the senses.  Calming sounds drown out unwanted noise such as traffic, while also creating natural music for the ears.

Beautiful Blooms for Late Summer & Fall

Often we buy plants that are in bloom at the start of the growing season. By late August, color may be lacking. Take a trip to your local nursery to pick out plants that will give you late summer and early autumn bloom.

Coneflower blooms midsummer to fall.

Our favorites?  Sedums and coneflowers.  Their bloom times and color contrast make for an excellent pairing. Keep in mind that new plants need consistent watering to establish strong root systems.

Small Back Yard Landscape Design & Installation

We had a lot of fun creating this small back yard landscape in Poulsbo.  The hardscape materials we selected to incorporate were concrete, river rock, and placement rocks, all in varying shades of blue-grey to match our client’s home.

CREATE YOUR OWN OUTDOOR RETREAT!

Retreat into the privacy of your own yard even with neighbors close by.  Trees and shrubs can be used to create green walls that enclose your space. Evergreens such as arborvitaes, spruces, pines, and boxwoods make great green walls for year-round enjoyment.

Landscape features such as a dramatic dry creek bed or a calming water garden can direct your eye to pleasing sights. Establishing focal points in your landscape diverts attention from unwanted views like the chipped paint of a neighbor’s home, and offers a place to take refuge from the stress of work and responsibilities.

landscapers kitsap county

Perhaps it’s the sound of nearby traffic that you’d like to block out. Water features provide natural music that can be tailored to your preference. A soft trickling sound can be achieved with a stream, while the high vertical drop of a waterfall can drown out the loudest of vehicles.

Seemingly minor annoyances that surround your home can be rid of for good. All it takes is thoughtful planning and creative execution. We’d love to help!

Outdoor Living Ideas Pt 1: Fire Pits

Fire pits are one of the biggest trends for outdoor living spaces this year.  Adding a fire pit to your landscape gives you a focal point for gathering and socializing, and provides warmth and light to stay outdoors late into the evening.

landscaping bremertonThere are many options available when it comes to material, from concrete to stone and brick, or a combination of all three.  The shape of your fire pit can be constructed to complement the style of its surrounding landscape, or fit within space constraints.

landscapers kitsap countyAnother consideration is fuel.  Gas, propane, wood, and ethanol each have their benefits and downsides.  A gas fire pit can be turned on instantly for impromptu family gatherings  though is not ideal for cooking.  Wood burning fire pits are great for roasting marshmallows, but generate smoke and ash.

landscapers kitsap countyCareful consideration and thoughtful planning will lead to perfect execution.  We would be happy to help!  The photos you see here are from a gallery of custom fire pits found on LandscapingNetwork.com.

Stamped Concrete Patio & Landscape Installation

We finished this project in May, and if you’ve liked us on facebook then you’ve already seen a photo of what this patio looked like before it was sealed.  We highly recommend sealing your concrete patio, as sealers protect and extend the life of your concrete.  They offer the added benefit of color enhancement.

Stamped & Colored Concrete for Patios, Driveways, & More…

Concrete is one of the most versatile hardscaping products on the market.   The many options available to vary concrete colors, textures, and patterns make it one of our favorite features to install in a landscape.

stamped concrete patiosAs a homeowner, one of your first considerations should be its functionality.  Ask yourself some questions pertaining to your needs and lifestyle.  Is your patio large enough for furniture? Does your driveway need to be extended to accommodate a new vehicle?  Would a walkway make access to your front door easier?  Or, perhaps you are simply looking to increase the value of your home.

exposed aggregate drivewaysOnce you know what function your concrete will provide and where it will be placed, then you can move on to think about design options. Study the architectural elements of your home and surroundings, as well as colors of your roof and trim.  By selecting a pattern to complement the stone veneer of your chimney, for example, the eye makes a smooth transition from home to landscape.

Full Service Landscape Design & Installation

We finished this landscaping project in April for a very happy customer in Bremerton.  I have to admit I’m quite envious of this inviting campfire we constructed for him and his family, tucked away in the back woods of their property.

We worked this residential property from the back to the front. This is a before shot of the edge of the back yard.

Here's the after shot. We installed gravel pathways so that this young family can safely take a leisurely stroll in their back yard, while feeling like they're in the woods. This was an idea from the customer, which we always welcome, as customers know best how it is that they will use their spaces.

You can consider the photo above with the skidsteer a before shot. Here is the after shot. The flagstone pathway in the upper right corner connects to a gravel pathway, which connects to the campfire. Also another idea from the customer.

We planted golden spirea, dwarf burning bush, japanese holly, ornamental grasses, irish moss, and woolly thyme to complement the existing, mature landscape.

Hydroseed is a higher quality product in comparison to sod. It roots properly as it grows, and you won't see any lines or seams as you would with sod. Sod is best used during the winter months when hydroseed cannot be applied.

One of the last features of this landscape that we installed was an aggregate concrete driveway, added on as an extension of this customer's existing driveway.

What To Do About Moss?

For all of you who have moss-ridden lawns and are seeking ways to eradicate the green fur in your turf, keep in mind that moss is what some call a “messenger sent by Mother Nature.”  Its presence tells you something about the condition of your soil.  Before reaching towards a product like Moss Out or a lawn fertilizer that controls moss, it behooves you to know why it grows in the first place.  Because chances are, if you don’t address the underlying problem, moss will simply grow again.

lawn maintenance kitsap county

Paul Tukey, founder of SafeLawns.org, lists the following reasons on his blog:

“ SHADE — In a lawn environment, the most common reason for moss is lack of sunlight. To be rid of the moss, you may have to remove the lower branches of trees — or cut down the tree altogether. When buildings can’t be moved, you may need to learn to live with the moss, or plant another shade-tolerant ground cover.

MOISTURE — Fast-growing mosses are attracted to persistently wet areas. If an area of your landscape cannot be readily dried by the sun or other means, you may resign yourself to the moss.

LACK OF AIR MOVEMENT — I know golf course superintendents who run large fans in shade areas of golf courses so that moss and fungal diseases don’t set in. If you have an area of your property that is shielded from the win, it can be an ideal location for moss to settle in.

ACID SOIL — Moss is almost always an indicator of a low pH, especially if it’s growing in a sunny area. Adding lime or wood ash may be necessary.

LOW FERTILITY — Whenever you see moss growing in sunny areas, the second consideration after pH is general soil fertility. If the soil is just plain dead or lacking organic matter, moss can creep in.

SOIL COMPACTION — Moss doesn’t typically grow on sandy, well-drained soils. It’s almost always found on compacted clay sites, because the clay holds moisture so effectively. Aerating and altering the soil structure can help alleviate moss.”

While chemical applications provide a quick and immediate solution, the following actions can be taken to address the underlying problems that encourage moss growth.  Trim tree limbs or shrubs that provide shade where your lawn needs more sun.  Improve your soil conditions by aerating or by applying compost to your lawn 2 to 3 times a year.  Compost is a safe and organic fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other essential nutrients that result in a lush, green lawn.

Alternatively, Tukey suggests allowing the moss to grow naturally.  Where the moss exists in your landscape becomes one less area that you have to worry about mowing!

Put Spring Rainfall to Use with a Rain Garden!

Kitsap County continues to grow in numbers and development.  More roads, parking lots, and sidewalks equate to less native forestry.  Plants and trees not only provide clean air for us to breathe, but their root systems naturally filter rainfall for future use as drinking water.  80% of residents rely on groundwater for consumption.

Solid surfaces don’t allow for water to pass through and re-enter the groundwater supply.  This increases the potential for flooding, and also results in contaminated stormwater runoff entering into our streams.  Stormwater starts out as rain that picks up pollutants as it trickles down roofs, driveways, roads and so forth.

One way that we can capture rain water to be recharged as drinkable groundwater, filter pollutants, and reduce flooding, is by constructing more rain gardens.

A rain garden is a depression in your landscape that is filled with a soil mixture designed to absorb water, and then planted to look like a garden.

landscapes rain gardens bremerton

Rain gardens consist of three zones: wet, dry and damp.  It’s important to know these areas so that the appropriate plants are selected and planted in their most favorable environments.  However, the most critical things to consider are how water is directed into your rain garden, and how overflow can be directed away safely.

Kitsap County has a team of Master Rain Garden Mentors who are available to visit your site and offer assistance.  Contact Peg Tiller at 360-337-7224 or ptillery@co.kitsap.wa.us or Jeff Adams at jaws@u.washington.edu.

Of course, we would be happy to help you design and create your rain garden!

That Time of Year…

With spring comes more energy and more time spent outdoors. The proverbial “spring cleaning” shouldn’t be contained within the interior of our homes, as our landscapes deserve the same attention. Our front and back yards are where we spend much of our time during the spring and summer months, and if you don’t have year-round maintenance, chances are these areas could use a clean-up! Let us do the work for you, so that you can enjoy your weekends in leisure.
